While women with long hair often get the blame for a drain clogged with the hair, the truth is that many different types of hair can cause an issue. If there’s enough hair, it’ll slowly begin to cause a problem. Beyond washing your hair in the shower, there’s also body hair and facial hair that try to make it down the drain after you shave. Many pet owners give their furry friend a bath in the tub and this hair clogs up the drain too. All of these sound pretty gross, but the truth is that it’s a common occurrence and actually pretty easy to deal with.
With that in mind, here are a few simple ways to deal with a drain clogged with hair:
#1 Baking Soda and Vinegar
A combination of baking soda and vinegar is so powerful it can unclog almost anything in your pipes, including human or pet hair. First, boil water and pour the boiling water into the drain and wait for a minute. While waiting, mix one cup of vinegar and a ¼ cup of baking soda, and then run it down the drain as well. You will hear a chemical reaction down in the pipes, but don’t worry- that is exactly what you want to happen! Repeat this another time after about 15 or 20 minutes. After the second time, go ahead and run the water in order to see if there is any improvement with the drain.
#2 Baking Soda and Salt
If the previous method didn’t work, it’s time to try adding salt. This is a great combination for extra stubborn hair clogs in your drain. This time you will mix a cup of baking soda and a half cup of salt. Pour the mixture down the drain and leave it overnight. It will fuzz numerous times and dissolve balls of hair in the drain. The next morning, you will see miraculous results and your drain will be back to normal!
#3 Bleach
In general, you want to avoid using chemicals in your drain, but bleach is an exception. Bleach won’t make a mess in your pipes, while it dissolves hair in an easy way. As hair has acidic properties, and bleach is a “basic” chemical, just a cup of bleach is all it takes to create the neutralization reaction between the two. In layman’s terms, it means the hair will go away! It would take about a half-hour for bleach to dissolve the clog, so pour it down the drain, watch your favourite tv shows, and then check back. You will be so happy with the results!
