We take for granted that our sinks will always do their jobs. Whether it is a kitchen or bathroom sink, you expect to run water down it and have it go, well- down. Then, one day it does not. The water just sits there. What’s going on? You have a clogged sink and it needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. Luckily, here are a few simple things you can do to learn how to fix a clogged sink. These include:
Tip #1: Pour boiling water down the drain.
It may take a few tries, but dumping boiling hot water down the drain is the easiest solution to unclog your sink. This is because many times, a clog is due to food particles, like fruit peels, pasta, meat fat, and rice, that never should have gone down the drain in the first place. This extremely hot water will help to further break up the food and wash it down. Next time, be careful with what gets washed down the kitchen sink!
Tip #2 Use a Plunger.
Your plunger isn’t only for toilet clogs. You can put it right into a kitchen or bathroom sink and use it this way as well! First, fill the sink until is about a quarter or halfway full of hot water. Then, position the plunger over the drain and start pumping. This action should help dislodge whatever is stuck in the pipe.
Tip #3 Check the P-Trap
If intensive plunging doesn’t remove the clog, disassemble and clean out the P-trap. When you disassemble the p-trap, the dirty water will flow out so be sure to have a bucket underneath! Loosen the slip nut on the trap arm assembly and then continue to loosen the waste tee nuts to wiggle the P-trap free. Once it’s out, clean it free of the clog.
